Welcome
Hello and welcome to the latest eComStation Newsletter!
Since the previous newsletter there have been new releases of the Mozilla apps:
Firefox 8.0.1,
Seamonkey 2.5
and Thunderbird 8.0.
Thanks to the efforts of Rich Walsh these versions offer printing support using both native drivers and the app's built-in PDF and Postscript generators.

Project highlight: Odin
Odin is the name of the project and software that allows users to run Win32
(Windows NT etc.) applications in the eComStation operating system natively,
almost as if they were native applications in the first place.
It also makes porting from Win32 to OS/2 easier by providing a Win32 API
implementation in OS/2: the Odin32 API.
Currently Odin is being rebuilt to the GCC compiler, instead of VisualAge.
This will bring many advantages like stability improvements and easier
incorporation of updates from the Wine project.
A new beta release (0.8.1) is available right now. Now this update is ready,
a new Flash plugin for eComStation will be released soon as well.
Samba for eComStation
Samba is a free implementation of the CIFS/SMB protocol for Unix, which allows LAN-Server
style file and printer sharing among machines running Windows, Mac OS, Unix or
eComStation (OS/2). The goal of this project is to port the Samba server and create Samba
clients for eCS (OS/2) in order to replace the functionality of the outdated
IBM-LAN-Requester/Peer/Server components that will be able to connect to more systems like Windows 7.
The most recent version of
Samba is 3.5 which is currently at beta 2.
OpenOffice.org update
On 1 June 2011, Oracle Corporation submitted the OpenOffice.org code base to
The Apache Software Foundation. That submission was accepted, and the project
is now being developed as a podling in the Apache Incubator under the ASF's
meritocratic process informally dubbed "The Apache Way". OpenOffice.org is now
officially part of the Apache family.
The project is known as Apache OpenOffice.org (incubating).

Currently OpenOffice.org 3.4.0 is
being ported to eComStation and source code changes have already been accepted by ASF.'
Software Subscription Services
A lot of exciting new updates are about to be released. As you can see above,
the Flash plugin
will receive a new beta version which should improve stability,
especially on fast multi-core machines. Apart from that a major overhaul
of the ACPI driver will be published,
that will perform a lot better and should support much more mainboards and devices
out of the box, without the need to tweak parameters as was needed with previous versions.
In order to be able to take immediate advantage of these updates, an active
Software Subscription Services is required.
PM Backup Suite
PM Backup Suite is an application from eCo Software that provides a PM GUI to make
the creation of system backup sets easy. A scheduler and restore tool are provided as well.
The backend of the program is BackEmUp, a cross platform utility to create backups of
all sorts of data. It can be used in Windows too, which can be convenient at times.
PM Backup Suite is
available in the Mensys online shop starting at 25 USD.
Merry Christmas and a happy 2012!
On behalf of everyone at Mensys, we wish you a most enjoyable Holiday Season and a
healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!
